Alma L. Abernathy was born on August 8, 1932 in Bronwood, GA to Bonnie Williams Sanders and David Williams. She was the second child of three siblings. Alma was baptized at Sanders Gift Church in Dawson, GA. She relocated in Detroit, MI in 1942.

Alma joined Greater Community Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend William Sanders (who has gone on to glory). Alma was an active member of the Choir Ministries. Alma attended and graduated from Northern High School. In 1958 Alma was united in Holy Matrimony to Samuel Abernathy and to this union two sons were born Sylvester and Steve.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • In 1972, she was awarded by Utica Business Opportunities Corp in Business Management.
  • In 1975 she received an Appreciation Ceremony for The Utica National Teenage Pageant.
  • In 1980, she received the Recognition Award for The National Council Of Negro Women.
  • In 1981, She was award a plaque in Recognition of Outstanding Service from The Cosmopolitan Center, awarded by the Utica Head Start Program and awarded a Certificate of Completion from her Bible Correspondence Course.
  • In 1998 She was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from Rainbow Group Home Licensing. She Received her Associate of Arts Degree and worked as a caregiver for several years, and she was also a Peer Counselor for teens and ex-offenders in Syracuse, NY.

Alma was a strong woman and had strong faith in the Lord. She would open her heart and doors to anyone in need. She gave all of her love to everyone. On September 30th 2015, God saw in His infinite wisdom that Alma had given all that she had, and that it was time for her to come home, so blessed her with eternal rest.

Alma was preceded in death by: her mother: Bonnie Williams (Sanders) ; father: David Williams; husband: Samuel Abernathy and sister: Mildred Kimbrough.

She leaves to cherish sweet loving memories: 2 sons: Sylvester and Steve Abernathy of Detroit, MI ; 3 granddaughters: Camille Abernathy, Crystal Abernathy and Tamia Terry of Detroit, MI; 1 sister: Patricia (E.J.) Borden of Detroit, MI; 1 brother-in-law Alfonso Kimbrough Sr.; 1 daughter-in-law: Cindy Reed (mother of Camille and Crystal Abernathy), and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends .
